Organizers and the online poker room partner of France Poker Series (FPS) have officially announced the cancellation of the FPS Paris, a poker event which was planned to be held at the Cercle Cadet from November 21 to 30. As mentioned on the statement, the unprecedented administration closure of the host gambling club is the main cause of it. Regarding how the current situation evolves, the organizers have decided to cancel the event as it would take a pretty big amount of time to find another facility to do so. Actually, they are forced to cancel the stage. Despite all this, players can always switch to other tournaments scheduled in other attractive cities like Deauville, Namur and Prague_ where the game of poker is King. According to France Poker Series official “Cedric Billot”, these alternatives are available to all (online) qualified players.

Italy has made an ambitious step forwards to modify its tax legislation on gambling. With the advent of a verdict issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union, Italy’s taxation authorities lost the case as the CJEU ruled in favor of Italian live poker players. Indeed, the CJEU handed down a judgment exempting Italian players from taxation on gains cashed in poker tournaments held overseas, or in any other country within the European Union. This judgment issued on Wednesday, October 22 solves a dispute between Italy’s tax board and two professional poker players, Pier Paolo Fabretti and Cristiano Blanco. As a reminder, Cristiano Blanco and Pier Paolo Fabretti have respectively $ 835,010 and $ 372,180of poker earnings they did not declare to the Italian tax authorities.

Poker has become a sensation among card game players across the world. What it sets apart from other card games is that it offers a rich panel of variants. In recent years, the Open-Face Chinese Poker (OFC) has experienced a growing reputation around the globe, a good reason driving organizers to dedicate a related major competition. Indeed, the Open-Face Chinese Poker World Championship will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, in December prior to the Prague Poker Festival and the World Poker Tour National. Born out of the initiative of Lithuania’s poker pro Tony G, his online poker room is organizing the competition. Recall that Tony G is an active member of the current European Parliament.

The Czech Republic will host the sixth edition of the International Poker Championship of the Czech Republic, the Czech Poker Festival 2014, in mid-November. Morocco is the haven of live poker events in Africa. In recent years, the country has been the most-favoured destination of poker fans from France and from other European countries who want to indulge themselves in casino while enjoying a dream holiday. However, playing poker under the sun on the other side of the Mediterranean might not be as interesting as years earlier since the Justice & Development Party (PJD) has led the coalition government. Actually, the PJD has been looking for several months to modify the current law, the objective of which is to ban advertisement related to gambling. As a result, certainty is that it would drop down attendance rate in casinos. The fact is that foreigners (tourists) make up the largest part of casino-goers list in Morocco.

In the previously planned schedule 2014 of the France Poker Series (FPS), Parisian gambling club “Cercle Cadet” should host the Paris leg of the tour from November 21 to 30. However, things are likely to change as the current evolution of the shady deal in which Paris-based gambling club are involved threatens the holding of major poker tournaments. “FPS Paris” is one of the most anticipated events by poker enthusiasts in France and from neighboring countries. Note that the FPS Paris attracted 800 players last year. But the temporary closure of the Cercle Cadet after that of the Aviation Club de France (ACF) shed doubt on the possible holding of the FPS Paris. May we remind you that the online poker site that partnered with Cercle Cadet had already run satellite qualifiers for the Main Event and the FPS High Roller since last weekend. This week, the FPS Paris Poker Week would grant 75 tickets. Due to this unprecedented situation, Cercle Cadet was forced to cancel the event.

Live poker tournaments are expected to head back to Norway. A new bill has recently been introduced to the Parliament with a great focus on modifying the harsh regulation that banned live poker in the country. The said bill was put under discussion following the recommendations issued by Thorhild WIdvey, the Norway’s Minister of Culture, along with the preparation work carried out by Norway’s gambling regulator, the “Lotteritilsynet”. As a reminder, the draft law aims to expand local gambling market with live poker and establish a new legislative framework ruling event organizers. During an interview on Friday, October 17, Thorhild Midvey noted that, thanks to this bill, Norway could earn back national poker championships which are held abroad.

The Mid-States Poker Tour 2014 at FireKeepers, Battle Creek, saw Ryan Dykhouse as the winner after he knocked a massive field of 517 poker players out. Notable names who failed to reach the final table included Patrick Steele, Michael Ross, Dash Dudley and Jean Gaspard. Irish authorities have shown a real ambition to reshape online poker /gambling legislation these days. Both gambling providers and players are all concerned with the government initiative. Following the footpath of England, Sweden and Norway, Ireland is now poised to review its gambling legislation. Indeed, Irish Parliament wants to impose 1 % tax on online poker cash game earnings. According to Ireland Minister of Finance, Michael Noonan, the decision has been made to back up equine industry. Despite the fact that the bill was handed to the European Commission early in summer for an in-dept examination, the new taxation is expected to be ruled by the end of this year or in early 2015. “The online gambling-related taxation will help the Republic of Ireland build a better future with a new economic policy while generating € 25 million to the country’s coffers”, Michael Noonan said.

Both players are the only contenders with a comfortable stack of over 2,000,000 chips

Poker enthusiasts in Latvia and Singapore feel helpless facing the would-be stranglehold of France’s online gaming regulator, ARJEL, on the decision leading both countries to update their respective gambling blacklist. As a reminder, a delegation composed of Latvia’s gambling regulator officials visited France last July to discuss with French counterpart, ARJEL. The focus of the meeting would be an exchange of experience on the field. Barely one week later, Latvia's Lotteries and Gambling Supervision Inspection (IUAUI) released its newly updated national gambling blacklist. The announcement was published right on the homepage of every gambling site involved in the matter. A month earlier, on Thursday June 5, 2014, a Singaporean delegation had had a meeting with ARJEL officials. Surprisingly enough, on Tuesday, October 7, the Singapore Parliament launched the second debate on the famed “Remote Gambling Bill”, a legislation which, once approved, would ban definitely all gaming/gambling providers from the country.

As we all know, the GPI releases a weekly update of its list ranking the top 300 live tournament poker players in the world. The GPI rankings dated October 13 is marked by the rise of Olivier Busquet rocketing to sixth place (+5) thanks to his fresh win in the 2014 UKIPT High Roller poker tournament.

The “European Poker Tour” poker tournament now reaches its penultimate day with the Day 4 battle scheduled this Thursday. Of the 127 warriors who entered Day 3, only 36 survived heading to Day 4. Poland’s Jakub Mroczek possesses the largest stack forward to Day 4 with 1,790,000 chips in hands. Players armed with more than one million chips include Portugal’s Joao Vieira (1,151,000) and Germany’s Artur Koren (1,126,000). Indeed, Day 3 was a hotly contested battle insofar as every single participant in the 127-player field fought hard to wrap the day up with a nice “In The Money” finish. Note that only 95 players would make the money in this 2014 EPT London Main Event. Mateusz Zbikowski was the first knocked-out. He took home £ 7,750 though (for his 95th place).

The atmosphere within Paris-based gambling clubs has been quite a stir these days. One month ago, the” Aviation Club de France” (ACF) was raided by French Judicial Police; and recently the poker room of Cercle Cadet has suffered the same fate. Tuesday, October 14 around 5:30 a.m, a dozen of police officers led by France’s Gambling and Racing Commission officials raided Cercle Cadet, one of the most prestigious gambling clubs located in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. Things being at stake include a major poker tournament, the France Poker Series, which is scheduled to take place on November 22. Compared with the case the ACF is involved in, that of Cercle Cadet seems to be tough enough by considering information broadcasted by the media early on Tuesday. Indeed, the French Judicial Police suspected Cercle Cadet of running undocumented gambling operations, conspiracy, extortion by organized group, money laundering, embezzlement between France and Morocco and breach of trust.

The London stage of the European Poker Tour (EPT) has been a success in terms of attendance. The Day 1A recorded 140 entries while the EPT Main Event Day 1B seduced 440 players on Monday, bringing the total field to 580 players. Thus, the EPT London 2014 has broken the attendance record of the last three years. This record-breaking field is probably the fruit of a reduced buy-in to £ 4,000 from £ 5,000, a fruitful decision made by the organizers to arouse attractiveness to the circuit. The festivity is hosted in the poker room of the Grand Connaught Rooms, featuring eight 75-minute levels of play; the end of Day 1B flight saw 280 survivors. Georgios Zisimopoulos secured chip leader with a nice stack of 171,500 chips.

After a failed UKIPT Nottingham final table last year, Brett Angell made it big by winning the UKIPT 2014 Main Event, an enticing tournament held in the poker room of the Grand Connaught Rooms (London). Brett found himself facing Switzerland’s Fabrizio Fuchs in the heads-up; the clash lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes, at the end of which Britain’s Brett emerged victorious. For his first-place finish, Brett Angell cashed £ 115,083 while Fabrizio Fuchs collected £ 98,717 of consolation prize.

Of the 1,089 players who registered on Day 1, only 8 made it through the final table. Brett Angell secures the chip lead with a nice stack of 5,190,000 chips. Sweden has made a decisive shift way into regulating poker industry in recent years. While local poker players benefit from a great freedom of bets, the country remains fairly strict in terms of taxation. Since 2012, “Skatteverket”, the Sweden’s tax authority, has been actively working on chasing poker players who hide their cash games or live poker tournament earnings. As a reminder, players who wager on regulated poker rooms possessing licenses approved by the European Union are not taxed on their winnings; however, those who gamble on non-EU licensed poker sites are required to report their earnings and pay regular taxes. To track down this second class of players, the Skatteverket has cooperated with other Swedish authorities and a panel of tax havens.

The European Poker Tour (EPT) has always been the most popular poker circuit in Europe for a decade now. As announced in April, the EPT Season 11 inaugurated, as usual, its opening with a stop in Barcelona. Five other stops were also unveiled during the official announcement, namely in London, Prague, Bahamas, Deauville and Monaco. Since October 8, the festivity has served poker lovers from the other side of the Channel, Britain. A rich panel of events are featured in the London stage of the EPT, but the most anticipated one is the Main Event, scheduled this coming Sunday. May we remind you that only three stops were listed for the first quarter of 2015, but the organizers have made a decisive step into adding another one. Alongside Bahamas and Deauville, Malta will also play host to the EPT Season 11.

While the case of the Aviation Club de France (ACF) is barely moving, a newly-planned reform relating to regulation of gambling clubs is likely to appear in the near future. Actually, the administrative closure of the ACF seems to motivate France’s authorities to thoroughly review the May-5-1947 Decree ruling local gambling clubs. Speaking of the ACF and its reopening, the case remains pending from the indictment of its president, Marcel Francisci, another ACF official and two casino dealers. As a reminder, the French national judicial police raided the ACF on Tuesday, September 16 at dawn over suspicion of undeclared gambling operations and money laundering. The fate of its 213 employees is now overshadowed by the unprecedented shutdown of ACF, one of the most prestigious poker facilities across France. To join force and arouse awareness of the case, a rally is expected to be organized on Thursday, October 9 on the Champs-Elysees.

In comparison with the other players who participated in this poker tournament, including European Poker Tour champion Mickey Peterson, Scheinberg has first entered the close circle of top earners with his three final table places and $ 45,000 of career earnings.

Italian Finance Minister “Pier Carlo Padoan” announced a series of measures to keep Italian-based gamblers safe from illegal gambling providers. The 140-page resolution entitled "Report on tax evasion" has just been presented to the Council of Ministers, marking a sheer determination of the Italian government to unseal suspicious transactions on illegal e-gaming sites. Actually, the Italian tax services will be in use to track down illegal gaming rooms that have no licenses issued by the Italian gambling regulator, AAMS. In case of suspicious transactions, the gambling operator as well as players involved would be immediately fined. These measures are applicable to all types of gambling, including poker. Note that in recent years, the Italian gambling market has entered a totally new dimension with the advent of online poker rooms.

From October 1st to 5, Holland Casino in Valkenburg, the Netherlands, hosted a national circuit of the World Poker Tour (WPT). This is the first time that the tour makes a stop in the Netherlands. The result did match what the organizers hoped for. Indeed, the € 550 Main Event seduced 402 participants. After five days of battle in the poker room of Holland Casino, the WPT National Valkenburg had its curtains fallen by the victory of Niels van Leeuwen. This is actually a great win for Leeuwen as he topped a massive field that included the top-ranked poker player in the Netherlands, Marcel Luske, and many other notable Netherlands-based poker pros.

The third stage of the France Poker Series (FPS) concluded on Sunday, October 5, with the Main Event emerging its winner after a tough battle that lasted about ten hours. Those who made it through the final table are Luuri Nesterenko, Dominique Franchi, Silma Macalou, Michael Poirier, Jean-Marie Peyron, Vladyslav But, Nicolas Guest, Lado Momcilovic and Hugh Cohen, the nine survivors of the 582-player field of the poker event. The said field generated a prizepool of € 558,720, € 327,730 of which was shared out among the finalists. Indeed, the final table of the FPS Cannes was played in the poker room of the Pullman Cannes Mandelieu Royal Casino on Sunday. Luuri Nesterenko bested the field after a tough heads-up against Dominique Franchi. Both players wrestled for two hours, and that the end of the game saw Luuri prevailed over his opponent.

Spain’s online poker market is also hit by the crisis that suffocates European gambling sector. However, that of Spain is holding up a little better than its counterparts. The DGOJ (La Dirección General de Juego del Ordenación), the Spanish gambling regulatory authority, recently released figures relating the country’s online gambling revenue for the second quarter of 2014. Like in the other European countries where online poker market is fragmented, Spain wrapped the second quarter up with a slight revenue drop, particularly in cash game. Indeed, the budget cut allocated to the market’s advertising is among the reasons of the revenue drop: volume of bets and the gross gaming revenue (GGR) are all plummeted. Statistically speaking, Spain’s online poker market withstands the downturn better than France and Italy. Actually, Spain online gambling market gradually loses ground while France has already been in the red for a couple of quarters now.

Online poker landscape in Belgium has been overshadowed by threatening clouds in recent days. Actually, the Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) has launched a fight against illegitimate e-gambling industry with a view to protect vulnerable players over gambling addiction. Following the implementation of the tax bill targeting Belgium’s top earners (their earnings are subject to over 75% of tax), free casino and poker applications now lie in the sights of the commission. The attack was carried out four years ago with the release of the online gambling blacklist (online poker included) following the adoption of a new law on Belgian online gaming market. And this time, free mobile poker and casino apps are to join the banned group. Thus, it would come as no surprise if we see a free e-gambling apps blacklist blacklist emerge in the coming days.
