In recent years, the poker tournament circuit has been overrun by talented unknowns, thanks to online qualifying tournaments. Last week's World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship was indeed no exception. The championship took place between April 18th and 24th.

Computer software publisher Funkitron announced the release of its new poker game, "Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament." As the name implies, the game is based on its namesake televised poker tournament, which has aired on FOX Sports Net and NBC. The game utilizes artificial intelligence technology in creating opponents, which are incidentally modeled after some of the world's most successful poker players, including Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer, Johnny Chan, Gus Hansen, T.J. Cloutier, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein and Chip Reese.

Online poker retail site BritePoker.net recently launched a promotion, in which poker fans can order a DVD from the new tutorial series, "Britepoker's Texas Hold'em A-Z," for free. The series includes two installments, one called "BritePoker's Guide to Dominating Poker" and the second, entitled "Britepoker's Wiz Kid's Guide to Dominating Internet Poker." The first volume teaches both basic and advanced strategies of Texas Hold'em. Volume two teaches players how to apply their newly learnt Texas Hold'em skills to the online poker room. The DVD helps players players understand the differences between competing online versus in a live poker game.

PokerNetwork, One of the world's premier online poker networks, recently announced its sponsorship of eGaming Review's Power 50 Summit, currently underway. The prestigious conference, held at Brocket Hall, England, brings together 50 of the online gaming industry's leading corporations.

Las Vegas' ritzy Bellagio casino has added a new World Poker Tour (WPT) branded poker game to its floor. This past weekend, the casino launched a 90-day field trial for World Poker Tour All-In Hold'em, after which, the results of which will be sent to Nevada gaming regulators. World Poker Tour All-In Hold'em is already played at two Indian casinos, located in San Diego and Biloxi, Miss., respectively.

Fans of ESPN's controversial poker drama, "Tilt," will be happy to know that starting June 14th, they'll be able to immerse themselves in the fictional Las Vegas poker underworld to their heart's content. On that date (mark your calendars), season one of Tilt will be released in a three DVD boxed set, for the neat little price of $49.99.

A California pastor, accused of staging his own kidnapping as an excuse to go play poker, has had his name cleared. The Rialto, CA chief of police issued a public statement, admitting that the kidnapping proved to be genuine and that a police supervisor concocted the staged kidnapping scenario. Police Chief Michael Meyers conceded that the said poker game did not exist and that the pastor, Rev. Kevin Brown, was not previously acquainted with his abductors.

Sen. John Cowdery, a Republican Senator from Anchorage, Alaska, is a leading proponent for implementing a system similar to those used in California and in Washington State to allow legal, licensed poker rooms in Alaska.

This is quite a week for the World Poker Tour (WPT), with its championship tournament nearing a close, while momentum continues to build for its third televised season, which debuted last month. A man from Penfield, NY pleaded not guilty to charges that he helped promote illegal gambling. The defendant, Phil Corleto, operates a poker club in East Rochester, for which he was in court Monday on misdemeanor gambling charges. Local authorities stormed Corleto's poker club two weeks ago, confiscating financial records and gambling papers from both the club and Corleto's home.

The International Association of Professional Poker Players LLC (IAPPP) recently signed a marketing agreement with CSMGI, a company which develops and acquires companies associated with specific sports niches. Accordingly, CSMGI will help the IAPPP develop itself as the official organization for pro poker players.

Pro poker star Daniel Negreanu has signed on with Card Shark Media to release a weekly column, offering his inside view on the world of poker. The new column, 'Playing Poker with Daniel Negreanu,' got off the ground last week and will be syndicated by Card Shard Media to newspapers across the U.S. and Canada.

Market research publisher Research and Markets announced the release of "Online Poker - Driving Gambling to New Heights," their new report on the burgeoning online poker industry. With the success of land-based poker, as well as online gambling in general, online poker's noteworthy success is no surprise. In response to this growth, Research and Markets surveyed industry experts to gain an understanding of the changing attitudes regarding online poker.

Online gaming company CYOP Systems International Inc. announced that it has inked a deal with Prime Multimedia International LLC, by which Prime Multimedia will manage hosting and systems administration for CYOP's forthcoming poker games. CYOP enlisted Prime Multimedia's hosting facilities to make way for the high amount of traffic expected at its new poker sites. The scalable hosting facilities and hardware boast an initial capacity great enough to support 40,000 simultaneous players. Ultimately, CYOP expects its poker offerings to serve millions of players.

A lawsuit lodged against a North Carolina video poker supplier by Randolph County was settled last week to the tune of $500,000. Celebrities flocked to Boston's pub scene, for a barhopping charity poker tournament extravaganza to help the Face of an Angel Foundation. Stars in attendance included Donnie Wahlberg, Joe Reitman, John Ratzenberger, ''7th Heaven's" resident Tom Brady-impersonator Geoff Stults and ''Hitch's" Jeff Donovan. Online poker room Pokertropolis released opening odds for this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) final event winner. Strangely enough, Hollywood stars often outshone poker stars in the odds listing. The top bet according to Pokertropolis is actor Ben Affleck at 450-1. Close behind, Tobey Maguire was set at 500-1, with James Woods in at 700-1. Other Hollywood names to grace the online poker site's odds listing include Matthew Perry, Don Cheadle, Shannon Elizabeth, Dennis Rodman, David Schwimmer, Danny Masterson, Chris Masterson, Mena Suvari and Charlie Sheen, all with odds of 1,000-1.

In another display of Daniel Negreanu's Toronto hometown pride, the poker pro helped kick off an International Poker Tours (IPT) tournament taking place at a local sports bar. The IPT tournament and others like it are apparently helping boost business for bars, which have suffered a recent blow as a result of both the smoking ban and the hockey league standstill.

Mobile software developer MobileGamingNow (MGN) yesterday announced the availability of MGN Mobile Poker, the first mobile phone game built on the company's interactive, multiplayer Mobile Gaming Platform. MGN Mobile Poker offers the popular Texas Hold'em version of the game and allows six players per table. The new Texas Hold'em game was made possible through Mobile Gaming Platform, which MGN acquired last month.

Mobile gaming provider Mobile Pioneer, Inc. announced the release of a new version of its Maui Texas Hold'em game, which now makes it possible to play the no-limit version of the game made popular on televised tournaments. The new version allows both no-limit and limit Texas hold'em. Maui Texas Hold'em is compatible with more than 30 mobile phone models.

Come July, beginner and intermediate poker enthusiasts will get a new general interest poker magazine. "Poker Pro," the new 80-page publication, will get off the ground with an initial circulation of 50,000 copies, to be available at bookstores and airports across the U.S. and Canada. Although for the remainder of 2005, the magazine will be released on a bimonthly basis, it will benefit from monthly distribution, starting in 2006.

Poker fans and industry members are getting a trade show all of their own. Come July, Las Vegas' Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino will host the first annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) Consumer Retail Show at its 55,000 square foot Pavilion Convention Center. The retail show's dates coincide with the first days of the WSOP's $10,000 buy-in main event.
