With its recent Million Dollar Freeroll, Paradise Poker has raised the stakes for the world of online poker, becoming the first online poker site to award a million dollars in a single prize. After seven hours of final table play, in which the other seven finalists met their match, English chef Lee Biddulph beat Arizona software engineer Mike Darweesh in the final showdown. The final table was comprised of nine expert amateurs who beat 3,900 online players to make it to the land-based finals.

While poker long ago started to take the place of golf as business executives' recreational activity of choice, now a company by the name of World CEO Entertainment LLC is organizing a major poker tournament especially for CEOs. Poker has been pinpointed by many execs as a valuable accessory for business negotiations, giving businesspeople a platform from which to demonstrate discipline, drive and intellectual prowess. World CEO Entertainment plans to give more than 500 CEOs from around the world the chance to do just that in one big poker tournament.

In a move resembling the marketing strategies of the highly publicized online casino, Golden Palace, newly founded online poker room PokerShare.com has reportedly laid down an offer of $100,000 to make its mark on a rural Kentucky hamlet, by the name of Sharer. Poker Share has publicized its bid to change Sharer's name to PokerShare.com, but the offer has so far fallen on deaf ears. The tiny rural community of Sharer has no mayor and no city council, and thus, finding an official to consider the poker site's offer has proven somewhat difficult.

According to a statement made by New South Wales Gaming Minister Grant McBride to the Australian parliament, a hotel in Sydney has allegedly lent a considerable sum of cash to a patron for use at the poker machines. According to allegations, the Markets Hotel lent a customer a total of AUD$30,000 (USD$23,000) since April 2004 for playing pokies on the hotel's gaming floor. The hotel is also suspected of illegally housing a EFTPOS payment processing station, which allowed the said patron to place an additional AUD$23,000 (USD$17,000) on his credit card

The European Poker Tour closed the first event of its second season, this past weekend in Barcelona. 325 players laid down the Barcelona Open's €4,000 (~ $4,860) buy-in, vying for the total prize pool of €1.3 million (~ $1.58 million). At the end of two days of competition, Frenchman Jan Boubli took first place, and the €416,000 top prize. Boubli will also join other EPT champions from this season at the €10,000 (~ $12,149) Grand Finale event, slated for March 2006, in Monte Carlo. Boubli took the crown following half and hour of heads-up play against ultimate runner-up Christer Johansson.

Newly launched online poker room RevolutionaryPoker.com is taking charity poker one step further. While a large number of online poker sites sponsor charity poker initiatives from time to time, especially in the wake of major disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and December's Tsunami, RevolutionaryPoker.com has made charity initiatives a constant component of the site's operations.

Celebrity online poker room Hollywood Poker is getting the stars together to play a little friendly poker, and contribute to a good cause at the same time. Hollywood Poker has partnered with the International Hospital for Children Foundation, a charity backed by actor Dennis Quaid, to provide aid for the children of hurricane-ravaged Louisiana.

Newly launched online poker room Titan Poker recently announced a new bonus scheme for new players, matching first deposits by 100 percent, up to a total of $500 in bonus money. The bonus, however, is conditional on the number of stars players earn by playing.

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), currently taking place at online poker room PokerStars.com, has proven even bigger than initial predictions. Since September 4th's kick-off tournament, over 12,500 players have registered for World Championship of Online Poker events, and prize pools are quickly surpassing minimum guarantees. The standard World Poker Tour program already airs in 116 countries and territories across the world, but thanks to two recent licensing agreements, the WPT will be able to lend its name to new, country-specific programming.

In light of the widespread devastation caused by the Hurricane Katrina disaster, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. has canceled an upcoming World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit event. The poker tournament in question was originally slated to take place late this month at the Grand Casino Biloxi in Biloxi, Mississippi, which suffered considerable damage in the hurricane.

Today, poker has become one of the worlds most popular casino games. The Poker World series is broadcast on ESPN and other channels, and books on how to improve your poker games are available at almost every book store. The World Poker Tour even has its own fan site on the Internet.

As a response to the devastation and destruction left by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and areas along the Gulf Coast, Royal Vegas Poker held an online poker tournament on Tuesday where 50 percent of proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross, benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is gearing up for its upcoming charity poker tournament, scheduled for this Friday, September the 9th. The hospital is sponsoring the tournament, ad proceeds will go to the Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center. The charity poker tournament carries a buy-in of $250, and will offer the top winner $10,000.

After making history when she became the first Hollywood start to take home a World Series of Poker gold bracelet, Jeniffer Tilly broke records yet again by winning the invitational WPT Ladies night. Her WPT win made her the first woman to win both the major WPT and WSOP women's events. By winning WPT Ladies Night III, held at the Bicycle Casino, located south-east of Los Angeles, Tilly earned herself the $25,000 buy-in to the WPT World Championship culminating this season of competition. In addition to the WPT World Championship seat, Tilly also won a pink chip set, of which there are only two of a kind, created to boost awareness for the breast cancer cause.

In the wake of the devastation that has ripped through the Gulf Coast region as a result of Hurricane Katrina, online poker room Absolute Poker is launching an online tournament benefiting the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief effort. Absolute Poker is offering a range of charity tournaments, with tables starting at $1, and going all the way up to $100. For all money gathered in the charity tournaments, Absolute Poker will match the buy-in with a donation of the same amount. These are not real-money tournaments, as money collected will not be awarded in prizes, but rather, will be donated to help the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. Alternatively, players who want to donate money, but who prefer to skip out on the tournament, can donate money directly through the Absolute Poker cashier.
