Paradise Poker Becomes First Online Poker Room to Award Million Dollar Prize
With its recent Million Dollar Freeroll, Paradise Poker has raised the stakes for the world of online poker, becoming the first online poker site to award a million dollars in a single prize. After seven hours of final table play, in which the other seven finalists met their match, English chef Lee Biddulph beat Arizona software engineer Mike Darweesh in the final showdown. The final table was comprised of nine expert amateurs who beat 3,900 online players to make it to the land-based finals.

In a move resembling the marketing strategies of the highly publicized online casino, Golden Palace, newly founded online poker room PokerShare.com has reportedly laid down an offer of $100,000 to make its mark on a rural Kentucky hamlet, by the name of Sharer. Poker Share has publicized its bid to change Sharer's name to PokerShare.com, but the offer has so far fallen on deaf ears. The tiny rural community of Sharer has no mayor and no city council, and thus, finding an official to consider the poker site's offer has proven somewhat difficult.

Sydney Hotel Accused of Loaning Cash to Player for Poker Machines
According to a statement made by New South Wales Gaming Minister Grant McBride to the Australian parliament, a hotel in Sydney has allegedly lent a considerable sum of cash to a patron for use at the poker machines. According to allegations, the Markets Hotel lent a customer a total of AUD$30,000 (USD$23,000) since April 2004 for playing pokies on the hotel's gaming floor. The hotel is also suspected of illegally housing a EFTPOS payment processing station, which allowed the said patron to place an additional AUD$23,000 (USD$17,000) on his credit card

Jan Boubli Takes First Event of European Poker Tour (EPT) Season Two
The European Poker Tour closed the first event of its second season, this past weekend in Barcelona. 325 players laid down the Barcelona Open's €4,000 (~ $4,860) buy-in, vying for the total prize pool of €1.3 million (~ $1.58 million). At the end of two days of competition, Frenchman Jan Boubli took first place, and the €416,000 top prize. Boubli will also join other EPT champions from this season at the €10,000 (~ $12,149) Grand Finale event, slated for March 2006, in Monte Carlo. Boubli took the crown following half and hour of heads-up play against ultimate runner-up Christer Johansson.

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), currently taking place at online poker room PokerStars.com, has proven even bigger than initial predictions. Since September 4th's kick-off tournament, over 12,500 players have registered for World Championship of Online Poker events, and prize pools are quickly surpassing minimum guarantees. The tournament series guaranteed a total prize pool of at least $8 million, and with four events still to go, including the $2.5 million-guaranteed final event, the WCOOP has already awarded $7 million, as of yesterday's event number eleven.
