A major project of private casino and 5 star hotel in Mauritius
Mauritius will receive in a few years a new 5-star hotel with a private casino. This high-end project of 5 billion Mauritian rupees is the initiative of the businessman from Hong Kong and Mauritius, Desmond Chu, following the call of the Minister of Finance Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo encouraging the diaspora to invest in the country. Little information is known about this new project called Phoenix hotel in Grand Gaube. The promoters have already identified and selected a field of nearly 120 hectares for this project. The private casino will remain its main attraction. However, access is restricted only for tourists and foreign travelers. The idea is to attract high-end tourists and VIP players from Asian countries.
For the Minister of Tourism Xavier Luc Duval, the opening of the private casino is a new experience that may boost the number of tourists on the Mauritian soil. In terms of game fee, such a private casino will certainly constitute a cash cow of the State. Taxes levied in casinos and gambling houses rose from 1.1 to 1.5 billion Mauritian rupees between 2007 and 2009 to reach 2.1 billion in 2014. A large delegation of Hong Kong businessmen led by Desmond Chu will be in Mauritius from next August 15 to discuss with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministries of Finance and Tourism, and the Board of Investment to start the project at the earliest.
