A slight improvement in the French online poker market during Q3 - ARJEL
The French Regulatory Authority of Online Games (ARJEL) had released last week its balance sheet on online poker activity in France during the third quarter. After six quarters of sharp decline, the market shows renewed optimism with a cash game activity, which decreased slightly and tournament activity in good health. After a decline of -13%, -16.4%, -21%, -23%, -19% and -17%, in the first quarter 2013 till the end the second quarter 2014, the level of cash game turnover has retreated of only 5% to 1.040 billion in the third quarter of 2014 against 1.099 billion one year earlier. The cash game on the first three quarters of the year amounted to 3.286 billion, a decrease of 14% compared to the same period of 2013 ( 3.841 billion).
For its part, tournament activities stay also in good condition with a further increase of 1% during the third quarter of 2014, to 354 million Euros against 352 million in Q3 2013. Since the beginning of the year, poker tournaments buy-in flatly increased of 5% over the first three quarters of 2013. But as usual, the tournament activity can not compensate the decline of activity in cash game. The figures in sports betting meanwhile still remain well above the rest with a 35% of increase over the same period. This increase in the level of bets in sport was generated by the Football World Cup and also the Basketball World Cup.
