David Williams edged Phil Laak to win the WPT Monster Invitational
To conclude the WPT Borgata Poker Open, the World Poker Tour organized an invitational Sit & Go challenge. Sponsored by the American company Monster, the "WPT Monster Invitational" seduced a number of notable names in the poker industry. Indeed, the "WPT Monster Invitational" held at the poker room of Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa (Atlantic City) was marked by six exceptional poker players: Scotty Nguyen, Antonio Esfandiari, David Williams, Vanessa Selbst, Tony Dunst and Phil Laak. Players would enter the game with a stack of 250,000 chips. After 90 minutes of play, Scotty Nguyen took the way out. A few hands later, Tony Dunst was knocked out to fifth place. His elimination allowed Vanessa Selbst to bag up the chip lead over the four remaining survivors. 30 minutes went by and the room saw Vanessa Selbst crushed Antonio Esfandiari.
Accordingly, she garnered nearly a million chips against 317,000 chips for David Williams while Phil Laak had 224,000 chips in hands. Surprisingly enough, the situation quickly took an unexpected turn. Selbst failed to maintain the lead and eventually fell to third place, allowing Phil Laak and David Williams to meet in the heads-up with 906,000 and 594,000 chips respectively. Thanks to his incredible skills, David Williams took over the chip lead to win the poker tournament of challenge. Phil Laaks run was stop in the second place, leaving the $ 20,000 first-place prize to David Williams, along with a pair of Monster 24K headphones and a Hublot King Power Unico watch. Williams was also awarded $ 35,000 of entrance-fees to the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, WPT LA Poker Classic and the WPT World Championship as well.
