Online games: Switzerland prepares at new legislation
This week, gambling and online poker was the headlines of newspapers in Switzerland with the development of a future legislation by the Federal Council. The two main lines of the future legislation are tax exempt earnings of gambling and the end of bans of online gambling websites. In Switzerland, winnings of lotteries and professional bet are currently subject to tax while those of casino games, including poker, are not. The change tax of rules was essential for the government to ensure that all games are treated the same way. To this end, the Federal Council opted for the tax exemption of all gambling in order to increase the market as a portion of revenues from lotteries, casinos and sports betting ensure the operating budget of the Confederation and cantons and feeding the budget of Old Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI).
As other provision of the future legislation, the authorization of Internet gambling offer ! Faced with the expansion of online gaming, the Federal Council also considered the legalization of online gambling in order to avoid the proliferation of illegal online casino and poker room. And finally, the future legislation also focuses on protection of minors and the fight against gambling addiction. Thus, gambling operators will be obliged to put in place appropriate safeguards to prevent addiction. For this purpose, an independent body will be established to oversee and advise operators. This new legislation on gambling should ensure the implementation of the new constitutional article which was adopted on March 11, 2012. Bern will focus on the subject in the second semester.
