Italy: The Regulatory Authority satisfied by the results of 2012
Alongside France, Italy, which already has several years of experience in the liberalization of online gaming, published an assessment of the sector during the year 2012. The report published by the Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS), the local regulator of poker and online casino games, evokes in general the satisfaction of the country in this direction it has chosen. "The Italian experience in the complex business of regulating online gambling is positive," says the report. Indeed, compared to 2011, the year 2012 was marked by a 1.9% increase in spending in this sector. Italian operators indeed recorded a turnover of 749 million. As the main cause, it was especially the introduction in the second half of 2011 of casino games like slot machines and poker cash game which supported this growth.
But for online poker itself, a decline in sales was observed on the Italian market, due to the dissipation of the novelty effect, according to the report. Indeed, if SNG and tournaments lead until 256 million of turnover a year earlier, at the end of 2012, the same sector received only 151 million. Similarly, the average monthly cash game stake was only around 17 million during the last year against 21 million in 2011. But anyway, the AMMS is very satisfied with the progress recorded in the regulation of online gaming and so far the tax system that the country adopted. Effectively, operators are not complaining about the level of taxation and capital flight to illegal sites were controlled.
