Italy: Effectiveness of new modalities in online game affiliation and advertising
With the New Year, Italy applies the new rules relating to online games including poker. The 'BalduzziÂ’ decree, promulgated in September 2012, took effect since a few weeks in the country. Among other things, its special clauses stipulate as mandatory the posting of a prevention message against addiction to online gambling, on all sites with a license, on their advertising bands as well as on the site of their affiliates. And all those concerned complied with the regulations without protest for the wellness of players. Many poker rooms and online sports betting websites in Italy had to cease their activities related to advertising and marketing just the time to comply with the procedures required by this measure.
Despite this new decree, the message content required by the Health Minister Renato Balduzzi remains almost the same as those visible on the top of French online gambling wesites. The only difference, the Italian version of prevention has no phone number. In France, the publication of this message is also prerequisite for a long time. However, the measure imposed is only available on the websites of online gambling operators and not their affiliates. The Italian case could certainly be taken as example in other countries of the European Union which already legalized poker and other online gambling.
