Netherlands: Towards a regulation of online gambling
In four years, fans of online poker and casino gambling in the Netherlands will be able to play freely and quietly from home, online. If local players can rely on the Holland Casino, known as the National Lottery and Lotto Staatsloterij in this sector, only entities allowed to offer gambling in the country, the choice could greatly extend shortly. Indeed, the country's new government decided to set up a procedure that will officially legalize online gambling market on its territory as part of a financial recovery in the Netherlands. Poker, sports betting and casino games can be part of this regulatory framework. According to studies, 500,000 to 800,000 Dutch are in fact playing illegally on the internet. The official opening of the market could reduce or even wipe out illegal gambling and also boost the country's economy.
The Regulatory Authority of the Dutch games, the Kansspelautoriteit is already active. It asked to 40 operators of online poker room to deny the access of Dutch players. Some of these operators agreed to this request in order to be eligible to obtain a legal license in the near future. Regarding the regulatory model to adopt, no decision has yet been taken. The government and relevant professionals think about a levy of 29% on gross gaming revenue.
