ARJEL: 24% growth for online poker tournaments in Q2
On Friday July 27, the French Regulatory Authority of online games (ARJEL) provided an update of the market of gambling and online poker in France for the second quarter 2012. In general, the market of online games is starting to take a prominent place in the environment of gambling on the French market. Indeed, the second quarter of 2012 was marked by a sharp increase in the sector as it can be seen with the rise of poker, sports betting and horse betting. Compared to the same period of 2011, cash game declined by 6% or a total amount of 1.51 billion. On the other hand, tournaments are in full expansion with an entrance fee of 345 million, an increase of 24% compared to the second quarter 2011. Online poker records a weekly average of 295,000 active accounts.
Horse betting and sport betting is still popular inside gamblers community. The Euro 2012 upped the ante in sports betting, 187 million with an increase of 36% of player accounts active against 146 million in the second quarter of 2011. Note that the Euro 2012 generated 30.8 million in bets. The London Olympics will further boost sports betting in France. But the horse betting industry remains the strongest market with a bet of 278 million for that period or an increase of 9% with more than 1,000 active accounts on average each week.
