Regulation of Poker in Europe: The common market won't be for tomorrow
The European Regulators roundtable on online gambling and poker during the XVII COFAR Congress marks an important step in the determination of these commissions to opt for a unique regulation in Europe but in reality, there is still some way to go especially in online poker. Indeed, the legal status of poker in every European country is different. Besides France, Spain and Denmark which have recently regulated online poker in accordance with European laws, other countries such as Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Hungary are in the process of studying options for controlling this game in their countries.
But alongside these countries that complied with the European regulation of poker, there are still countries where the government does not follow European laws. Of these, we can retain the case of Romania, Poland, Norway, Greece, Germany, Finland, Estonia or Belgium. Some of them have a poker regulation at national level but the regulation does not comply with European laws. So it means that nine of the nineteen European countries are lagging far behind other countries where poker is already regulated like Denmark, Spain, France, Gibraltar, Italy, Malta and the United Kingdom. The European Commission wants as it did with e-commerce to provide a common market by proposing the regulation and taxation of online gambling in Europe for player safety.
