Taxation of French poker players: Aurélie Filipetti an amendment
After several weeks of silence but also preparation, taxation of online poker players and other online games in France is once again in the headlines with the submission of the amendments at the draft supplementary budget for 2011 by Aurélie Filippetti, PS deputy. On this amendment, the PS member or parliament suggests to tax gains of more than 5,000 won annually by professional poker players. In France, gambling winnings are not currently subject to taxation. The gains are variable but as soon as players cash in gains on a regular basis, the tax administration no longer considers poker and other online games as a game of chance, which leads to an opening to a tax on earnings. Ms Filippetti said in this regard that "the issue of taxation on earnings of professional players of poker is recurrent and has so far been settled."
In France, more than a million people play online poker which 1,500 of them earn their living from poker. The amendment has already received a favorable opinion of the Finance Committee but must be voted at a parliamentary meeting. For their part, members of the parliament are currently discussing until Monday the amending budget. The amendment to tax players will be applied from December 1, 2011 and concerns regular gains from poker practice, sports and horse betting. This amendment is a good news for the government especially for the budget minister Valérie Pécresse. Indeed, in her recent evaluation report on online gambling, the Minister referred to the imposition of players who live from poker.
