French online poker: 8 billion of stake recorded in the French market in a year
The first twelve months of opening of the market of online gambling and poker in France have already passed. This first anniversary is marked by a very mixed result for the three sectors that are the French sports betting, horse racing and online poker. In general, the Groupement des Éditeurs de Services en Ligne (Group of Online Services operators) reported a revenue of 9.5 billion of stake made by French players during the first year of the three combined operators. The online poker market in France had the biggest share of turnover with 8 billion accumulated over a period of one year, in cash games and entry fee to participate in poker tournaments on approved websites.
Therefore, this considerable amount compared to the other two sectors which share the remaining 1.5 billion is not necessarily positive for operators of online poker. Indeed, the organizers of cash games and online poker tournaments complain mainly about heavy tax obligations they owe to the State. As a reminder, since the promulgation of the Law of May 12, 2011 on online gambling and the effective opening of market, 35 operators got the legal authorization to operate on online gambling through the 49 licenses distributed among which 25 operate on poker, 16 on sports betting and 8 on horse racing. About the French legislation precisely, the market of online gambling in France, authorities in collaboration with all operators are currently discussing how to improve its application.
