State of Hawaii: Poker won't be legalized this year
Any other bill on live and online poker won't be submitted again before the year 2012 in the State of Hawaii. Indeed, the Hawaiian standing Committee of Finance, composed by the affairs and economic revitalization Committee and the House Judiciary, decided to abstain, for a minimum period of one year, the study of the legalization and regulation of poker. However, with the Senate bill 755, the Hawaiian leaders in charge of the analysis of this field had the opportunity to comply, once and for all, this issue concerning the poker law. Thus, it is with Utah, the only two U.S. states which do not to recognize the legalization of this form of gambling.
To explain the negative decision of the standing Committee of Finance about the live and online poker bill in the state of Hawaii, the main argument was based on the bad effects of gambling on local tourism. Indeed, for Dianne Kay, president of the coalition against the legalization of gambling in Hawaii, "the legalization of gambling would introduce an undesirable element in our islands and have a very negative effect on the tourism industry." Namely, the bill 755 which recognizes Texas Hold'em and Omaha as games of skill would give as advantages for the State the possibility to receive various prestigious international tournaments, as well as the legislation would likely could bring a minimum sum of 100 million dollars for each online gambling site which settle down in the island.
