ARJEL: A positive first quarter 2011 for online poker in France
The balance of activity indicators of online gambling including online poker, sports betting and horse betting for the first three months of this year 2011 was not in its best performance, according to figures published by the French Regulatory Authority of online games (ARJEL). The French market suffers from the impact of restrictive legislation. Of the three areas proposed by the operators to bettors, only online poker has a positive balance unlike the other two with a more or less stable for horse betting and negative balance for sports betting.
Here are in some figures the evolution of the French market of online gambling for the first quarter of 2011. Online poker in France registered an amount of bets placed reaching around 1.9 billion with a 4% increase for entry fees in poker tournaments that has risen from 261 million to 271 million. However, this figure is still far from the annual target which is valued at $ 1.2 billion or 300 million per quarter. For their part, horse betting recorded a constant turnover of 241 million for the first three months of this year which is mainly due to the stability of customers, in particular that of PMU estimated between 80-85% of the market. Finally, with a level of bet falling more than 40%, the French sports betting sector is in a very bad condition because it generated only 33 million while specialists' forecast was 147 million for the months of January, February and March 2011.
