Sweden: Justice decides and considers poker as a game of chance and game of skill
The Swedish Supreme Court finally ruled on the fate of poker that divided the opinions of poker players with the administration of that country. A decision that wasn't easy to take because the conflict already dated two years with the case between, in 2009, the Swedish national lottery and four organizers of live poker tournaments and online tournaments for real money. A priori, the Swedish judges required the service of poker experts and mathematicians for an explanation of the principle of the game and then draw a conclusion. Ultimately, they based their assessments on the kind of poker played.
Thus, judges ruled that poker tournaments are to be classified as games of skill while cash game is a game of chance. This new point of view of the Swedish Supreme Court has a real consequence in the interpretation of each of the parties, including that of the poker players who felt safer with the previous status of game of chance, synonymous of zero tax to poker winnings. But today, this new law will give even more reason to tax administration if it decides to perform the same 50% rate of tax on income with the taxes on poker winnings. But in anyway, this ruling is a very good news for the consideration of this game.
