Angouleme and Cognac: Classified poker underground cities of the region of Charente
A recent study looked at underground parties often found in the Charente region, in France. Typically, these illegal poker games are common in bars and restaurants where gamers are used in tournaments and cash games. At the top of the list of cities that are organizing this kind of prohibited tournaments are Angouleme and Cognac with buy-in quite exorbitant. The establishment managers surveyed in those cities said that poker games held there are certainly illegal, however, these owners of bars and restaurants prefer to talk about their rights in reference to European law. They feel sorry that this authorization conferred by this European legislation is not allowed in France.
In anyway, everything is ready in a case of a possible police raid in these places because the police will never see the money but only tokens. With regard to the actual poker games, buy-in range from 20 for Sit and Go to 1,000 on each table. Many players come to play in these underground parties because the nearest casino from the city is at 100 kilometers. Tournaments are usually held every afternoon but that does not prevent night parts with a buy-in from 40 and a prize pool of 1,500. As reminder, the managers of these bars and restaurants in the Charente region are not immune to penalties equivalent to 7 years imprisonment, 200.000 fine and the closure of their shop.
