Belgium: Online poker will be legal from 2011
Belgium is the new European country that legalized online gambling in its territory after a few nations predecessors in the Old World. This new legislation affecting poker, sports betting and casino games is the same as that of France with a small difference that would surely have a big effect because only owners of physical casino will be entitled to licenses. In a few months from now, Belgian players will have to limit their appetites on online poker sites having no license. So after a lot of noise for some time, the Belgian authority has taken decision by offering to those who are fond of online gambling the effectiveness of the law from the beginning of 2011.
Regarding the measures taken, Belgium want, like all other countries that have agreed to the legalization of online gambling, to protect players against gambling addiction but it also aims to fight against money laundering without forgetting the fight against illegal gambling. The decision to license only terrestrial casino holders is synonymous of a limited number of operators, which is not without reaction from those who feel aggrieved by this decision. The last movement that we heard is that of their intention to file a claim beside the European Commission against this legislation favoring some operators. To be continued.
