Greece : Towards a poker boom after its legalization
OK, it's official! Greece followed the lead of other European countries, notably Italy and France in legalizing poker, only offline for the moment. A new variety of games will be available to the Greek players in casino rooms, including among others, Omaha and Texas Hold'em. Several tournaments will also be at the rendezvous of lovers of this card game. Following this great news as expected, the Greek media are already talking about an explosion of poker in the country, referring to what happened in Italy after the government took the same decision. The case of horse betting and online casino games with rumors of a possible liberalization are also debated in the country.
The Greek Government has also already demonstrated its willingness to soon legalize online games including poker, always taking the examples of Italy and France. This legalization should begin in 2011, according to rumors after the declaration of the Greek official monopoly, Ioannis Spanoudakis. The outline of this Greek bill consist generally of an obligation for operators to be physically based in Greece, such as servers and have a corresponding domain name, a principle of license for operators wishing to enter in the market, the blocking from internet providers of unregulated sites and the blocking of suspicious financial transactions by banks. Greece will have to choose in the other hand if it wants to allow an unlimited number of operators of online poker or limit access and the to fix the level of taxation.
