United States : Heated debate between elected officials and defenders of online poker
The presentation of the draft law on online poker by the Republican Barney Frank on Wednesday in front of the U.S. Congress has been marked by a stormy debate. The House Financial Services Committee has gathered around a very animated discussion Barney Frank author of the bill, the poker star Annie Duke, who represented the Poker Players Alliance, Lynn Malerba of the Mohegan Tribe, Ed Williams representing Credit Union National Association, Tom Malkasian from Commerce Casino's California and Michael Fagan, a consultant on the application of the law. The meeting was marked by a debate with sometimes outrageous as when Bacchus compared poker players to addicted to heroin. In the frustrating, Annie Duke has compared the arguments of the opposition as the views of Chinese and Iranian tyrants.
The disagreement has prevailed throughout the debate. Falgan who opposes virtually Frank's bill said that he condemns this act, which focuses on foreign operators and according to him, the application of this new law could increase the risk of money laundering. Bacchus has also raised the question about the age limit of players allowed on the online poker sites. But Frank has immediately responded that the concern of politicians do not really focus on the protection of children. According to Barney, it is only a ruse to protect the benefit of certain individuals. And he completely regrets the fact that the opinion of some minority adults blocked the application of this text. It is, according to his view an attack on freedom of citizens. An election should be hold on the next two weeks and if the committee approves the majority bill, it could be reviewed by members of the House of Representatives.
