Abramovitch: The Russian won his case against La Repubblica
The Russian Roman Abramovitch, has won the case against the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica", the Russian billionaire and owner of the famous English football club accused the newspaper of defamation and misrepresentation. Indeed according to the newspaper, the wealthy Russian businessman reportedly lost $ 500,000 in a poker game after seeing 3 of the 11 billion of his personal fortune evaporate with the financial crisis. The article also states that "The Passion of Mr Abramovitch for online poker has led to a crisis with his partner Dasha Zhukova. Counsel for the businessman said that these allegations are totally false and have caused to Abramovitch "distress and embarrassment." The owner of La Repubblica Gruppo Editoriale L'Espress, was forced after the trial to make a public apology and pay substantial damages, which will be donated to charity.
In reality, if Abramovitch had financial problems, they are much more likely related to the financial crisis. The loss of ¤ 500,000 that the La Repubblica have falsely claimed, are tiny compared to the loss of £ 6.3 billion that Abramovitch has suffered because of the crisis, according to a report released last month by Finans, a Russian business magazine. Although the offending article was published in Italy, the case was heard at the High Court in London a few days by the judge, Mr Michael, one of Britain's best-known media.
