Hold-up at the EPT Berlin: an error of organization according to Michel Abecassis
The professional poker player French Michel Abecassis was caught inside the incident which happened on Saturday at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. He witnessed the scene when criminals have tumbled during the competition of the European Poker Tour and fled with the money, the amount of damage is estimated at 240,000 Euro. According to his description of the scene, it began by din at the other end of the hall. Then there was the sound of hanging and when the doors were opened, he had seen people in full action. Then the only thing that he heard was "Lay down, it's an attack!". Those person present at the scene thought it was a terrorist attack which caused widespread panic in the poker room.
The attempt to evacuate the room has caused a rush that caused minor injuries. If we believe the experience of Michel, who is an accustomed of key poker tournaments, this kind of event should be held in ultra-secured casinos. "This kind of theft would never happen in Las Vegas for example," he added. We are used to see large sums of cash for the show, but this money is subject to particular surveillance because it is conveyed by a myriad of security guards. Not to mention the cameras which are connected directly to the police. Yet, in Berlin, the tournament was held in a hotel and only a bay window separate the cash prizes for the tournament and players.
