Loto-Quebec: Public Health requests the postponement of its online gambling project
The authorities of public health and the State Company Loto-Quebec went to war; the first considers that internet and online gambling like poker are real threats to the population of Quebec. Public health asks Loto-Québec to delay its project, but the State Company has categorically rejected the request. The new online gambling offer of Loto-Quebec could attract new players and quadruple the number of players who have problems with gambling, explained the 18 public health directors of the province to ask Loto-Québec to delay the project. But nor the finance minister, Raymond Bachand, neither the State Company do not want to postpone. "It's good to continue to bring money to the government, but we must take account the social impacts too", said with bitterness the Director of Public Health of Montreal, Richard Lessard.
Loto-Quebec will not backtrack, said the press secretary to the Minister of Finance. For its defence Loto-Quebec doubts about the scientific data published by the health directors. These data are collected in a recent opinion from the National Institute of Public Health. The author of the report Elizabeth Papineau, maintain her positions. "We cited 57 studies, she explained. They are clear; if we increase the accessibility, participation and therefore the problems will also increase. Loto-Quebec promised to channel its new game offerings in a controlled circuit, secure environment in which integrity is impeccable.
