Sports betting: 1.6 billions of turnover expected for 2010
According to an evaluation of a study published last Monday, the French market of sports betting and horse betting could reach a turnover of 1.6 billlion euros in 2010, one year after the opening of online games to competition. This figure could increase again in 2012 to reach 2 billions whereas in 2008, the French market of online sports betting generated only 26 millions of turnover to La Française des Jeux, the firm which is the monopoly holder on a whole income of 630 millions played by French gamblers on sites of online games. These some figures result from a study of Francis Merlin, presented this Monday in Monaco during the Sportel exhibition, a show dedicated to sports, to television and to new media.
Still according to this study, 900,000 French gamblers regularly play on illegal sites of online games and only for the last tennis tournament Roland-Garros, 230 millions was spent on only one and single site of online games. And we should not expect to a fall of the French passion for online games in the years to come, because the fluctuation of sites of online games on hand phone endowed with Internet (Smartphone, PDA) will still boost this figure. Merlins study foresees an important rise of advertising investments by new operators who will do everything to integrate the French market. As example, Merlin calls upon the case of operators of online games and clubs of foot which will be paid 4 to 12 millions per year to carry these operatorss logo on their shirts.
