Opening of online games: The PMU and the FDJ go onto the attack
In expectation of the opening of online games and sports betting on Internet in 2010, both French actors of the sector are obliged to diversify their offers. For the Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU), the liberalization of online games establishes a real threat for its activity. Popular Sports as football risk darkening equestrian bets. In order to face the invasion of other operators, Philippe Germond the new president of PMU lets know that they are widening their tender of online bet to all sports. According to him, this strategy is going to allow PMU to wear down 20 to 25 % of the part of sports betting market that is more than 400 millions.
By waiting for the new law concerning online games, probably before the beginning of the 2010 World Cup of football, PMU does not envisage yet collaboration with one of the 200 active actors of online game which is all up to here illegal according to the French law. A tender of online poker was not also pushed aside from the company strategy. As for the Française des Jeux (FDJ) which consider 1.5 million players registered on their site, they are conscious that this figure could be dissolved as snow in the sun from the opening of the market of online game. For that purpose, the range of its games was renewed. The number of small winners in bingo was increased; FDJ has just launched Oxo which is a new game of draw. They also increased their partnerships with sporting federations like the sponsoring of the French Federation of Rugby.
