ESPN and WSOP: Partnership confirmed until 2018
The American TV station ESPN (Entertainment Sport Programming Network Incorporated) and Harrahs Entertainment which is the group owner of the World Series of Poker announced the signature of a new contract which is going to prolong for 7 years their partnership. Let us indicate that ESPN is a TV network dedicated to sports, it is a reference in his domain, and it could be compared with CNN for news or with MTV for music. WSOP attracts every year 82 millions TV viewers only in the United States what urged ESPN to preserve the rights of broadcasting until 2018. ESPN programs every year World Series of Poker since 2003, but the contract is going to expire after the World Series of Poker of 2010. This new contract will allow the TV station ESPN to detain the exclusivity of the broadcasting of WSOP until the year 2018.
The terms of the contract stipulate that ESPN will have to broadcast at least 32 hours the events of the World Series of Poker including the gold bracelet tournaments and the November Nine finale. Doug White, director of the programs of the TV station ESPN asserts that he "is excited to continue the collaboration with the TV station. Poker remains a solid and successful product for our TV station. ". From his part, the president of Harrahs declared "be proud of this collaboration for another contract of 9 years. This contract assures that our offer continues to be proposed to fans of poker of the planet thanks to ESPN group". In spite of a fall of the audience in an order of 8 % during the first three weeks of the 2009 season, leaders of the TV station remain confident for the continuation of the season because they consider that these three weeks do not reflect the whole season.
