Saskatchewan: The Canadian province where gambling expenditure is the highest
The Canadian province of Saskatchewan, a region populated with more than one million residents on an area of 651,000 km square is the part of Canada where population is the most enthusiastic about casino games. A real growth was noticed these last years. According to the data recorded by Canada Statistics, people living in Saskatchewan aged more than 18 years old had multiplied by 10 their average expenditures in casinos, in order to play blackjack, roulette, bingo or poker. If this expenditure was indeed at $86 per year for each resident in 1990, in 2008, each person authorised to play in casinos had spent $825 on average. Compared with the whole country, this population living in the West of Canada, delimited by Manitoba pays so $300 more than those of their compatriots in gambling.
The context of the 1990s is very different from that of which happens now, Christine Tell, Minister in charge of the Gambling asserts, commenting upon this evaluation. The great increase of the number of the video lottery terminal in the province and casino changed completely the situation in the sector. This province has got indeed 4,000 video lottery terminal of and eight casinos against a very limited number two decades ago. The Canadian Association for the mental health in Saskatoon, Shauna Altrogge exposes the easy access to lotteries and casinos as well as the publicities promoting gambling. For State which is one the biggest beneficiaries of casinos success through taxes, an annual budget of $5 millions is devoted for helping addicted players.
