First Ever Government-Owned Online Poker Site Launches Tomorrow in Sweden
Swedish gaming companies Boss Media and the government-owned Svenska Spel are getting ready to debut their new poker room, which will officially hit the Web tomorrow. Both companies have a long history of working together, but this marks their first joint venture dedicated specifically to poker. Boss Media, a gaming software supplier, licensed the technical components of the poker site to Svenska Spel, which actually owns the site. The new poker room is a first for the online poker industry in that Svenska Spel will become the first ever government-owned and licensed gaming company to release an online poker room. In all, there are approximately 140 World Lottery Association (WLA) companies, i.e., government-owned and licensed gaming companies, in the world. Svenska Spel's move to launch an online poker site makes it a true trailblazer in the world of online gaming. Only time will tell how long it takes for other government-owned companies to follow suit. Svenska Spel's new online poker room has been anticipated since November, 2005, when the company won clearance from the Swedish government to launch an online poker site. Boss Media said that, since then, it had been hard at work to integrate a system that offers high-level poker entertainment while keeping responsible gaming a priority. "Gaming responsibility is a critical factor for the government-owned licensed gaming companies. Our solution is clearly more advanced that what is available on the market today. It creates greater security for the end-users as well as for the gaming company since they gain increased control of the gaming operations," noted Boss Media President Johan Berg.
