Poker Bill Proposed by New York State Senator
A New York State legislator has proposed a bill that would allow poker to be played in venues such as restaurants, bars and clubs. According to the bill, poker games could be utilized as a means to create revenue for businesses, to generate tax money and to contribute to charities. The man behind the bill is Democratic State Senator John Sabini of Queens, who serves on New York's Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee. He was quoted as saying that the bill would permit "social poker" games, played mostly for non-cash prizes. Only one top player would be able to receive a cash prize, and one not exceeding $100. The bill also caps the entrance fee for poker games at $50-a-head and limits game time to 24 hours.
