Italy: Ban of gambling advertisements on TV channels and radios
Presented to the Italian assembly by the senator from the Socialist Party, Nencini Riccardo, the law stipulating the prohibition to broadcast ads on gambling, particularly online poker on TV channels and radio stations was finally voted unanimously during the meeting of Tuesday. According to the senator Nencini, the enforcement of this amendment is a measure taken to fight against gambling addiction. Happy to be proved right, the senator has declared that it is a victory for the Socialist Party. Let us note that this amendment doesnt concern online advertisements. Besides, its included in the bill already approved by the House of Representatives in September 2013. This text evokes certain tax measures and standards to be respect by operators proposing horse racing and games of slot machines.
Having known a few changes after the reading and the vote by the Senate, the bill will come back to the House of Representatives. If it is approved, its promulgation risks generating negative impact on the development of the market of online poker in Italy, which is already facing a significant decrease of revenue. In fact, according to statistics, the rate of participation to gambling is in full decline and advertising campaigns is one of the key facts to encourage players to invest more money in gaming. According to a report published by a magazine, the Italian government is currently considering the requirements of legal operators concerning the modification of the tax base on gambling taxes, in order to ameliorate the revenue.
