UK: Three million new online gamers recorded in 12 months
In a period of one year, the number of online players in the UK registered an increase of over 40%, according to a study by Nielsen Media Research. In numbers, this increase means about 3 million new players who are added to the bettors, poker and online casino players already identified. Taking the example of Camelot, the operator of online lottery, it identified from July 2009 to July 2010 about 5 million more visitors. Indeed, from 4.4 million in the 7th month of the year 2009, the visitors of the website of this company rise to 9.4 million 12 months later, an increase of 88%. According to analysis by Steven Schwartz, the number of players on online poker sites has also exploded over the last decade. He further explains that poker via internet became more attractive to customers than live poker.
Another important comment on the explosion in the number of customers in online gambling sites is that half the online players are workers who earn less than £ 30,000 throughout the year. Neil Beston noted that the phenomenal boom of gambling sites is usually the result of the arrival of middle-aged men, and educated on these sites. A report on January 6th, 2010, by the British Minister of Culture, Media and Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe announced that he prepares to consult key actors of the UK market of online gambling to modify the amendments of the legal framework currently effective in the United Kingdom and he want to adopt a system of licenses delivered by the Gaming Commission, as it is becoming more and more chosen by European countries.
