Lorient: Six months suspended prison sentence for an organizer of illegal bingo
After his appearance in the court of Lorient, France, the director of a limited liability company located in the pontibyenne region was sentenced to six months suspended imprisonment followed by a fine of € 5,000 for having organized illegal bingo. According to the prosecutors, the manager of the company held 358 bingos in three years, without making any tax return. Yet, according to the law of May 21, 1936, the organization of a bingo is governed by laws of shows except for associations. Thus, the organizers are required to make a statement of benefits. At his hearing, the manager of the company denied the accusation and said he acted as a simple facilitator rather than an organizer. He also revealed that bingo games were organized by the associations.
However, Customs described his acts as illegal. It turns out that the accused was responsible of advertising the events and provide prizes to winners in exchange of a portion of the profit. And with the 358 bingo games organized, a revenue of nearly two million Euro have been generated by this man. The prosecutor authenticated this as a business act undeclared especially as the president of the association that is supposed to organize the events did not confirm the words of the accused. Face to the sanction imposed by the court, the defense counsel requested a release while maintaining that his client had only draw bingo numbers. Note that this decision will be published in the press and he must also pay a sum of € 62,453 for the fund of the State.
