Arjel: Favourable for the change in the tax base in France

Taxation of online poker makes the headlines of newspapers in France with the revision of the Government's report that could change the tax levied on operators of online gambling and also on poker players income especially professional players. Maintaining or increasing the current tax could lead to the increase of illegal websites that is synonymous of loss for the 35 online gambling operators licensed in France. Indeed, the online game market has seen a decline of more than 20% by number of active players since the regulation of gambling websites in 2010. On the other hand, the sites approved by the Regulatory Authority of Online Games (Arjel) does not make money despite a fine figure of € 177 million of gross gaming. This money problem led approved sites to lower the remuneration of players. So, these players always looking for gains are increasingly attracted by illegal online poker room.

Faced with this situation, the Arjel is worried about the future of legal online gaming sites. The President of the Arjel, Jean-François Vilotte suggests the changing of tax base so to let operators of online games to have enough benefit to grow and therefore attract more active players. Site owners were the first to complain about the possibility of maintaining the tax and its impact on the market but since a few time, others actors rallied to their cause including Afjel and Ffejel.
