Italy: Online cash games will be effective from March

The Italian government of Silvio Berlusconi has given its approbation for the legalization of cash games in online poker rooms and online casino offers in the country. The publication of the legal decree relating to this decision was released on the evening of Thursday, February 3, 2011. However, the application of this law on online poker for real money at Squadra Azzura is not available from now because players should wait until early March to see on the various Alpine sites the first cash game tables. Moreover, online poker rooms are required to follow from A to Z the new technical procedures established by the terms of reference in order to upgrade their licenses.

In general, the existing law is almost the same as that submitted to the European Commission in July 2010. The Italian law will charge a 20% tax on gross gaming receipts. For the particular case of online poker tournaments, the regulatory act of the Italian government authorized satellite and online tournaments for real money of € 250. Moreover, at least 90% of the amount collected from players must be paid at the rate of return. This Italian decree came just in time for the online poker market in the country which registered a 28% increase for 2010 and a probable additional generative potential contribution of € 400 million for the current year. For information, since the legalization of the Italian online gambling market in 2008, it is considered as the biggest of the Old Continent. Just for last year, its entire turnover was close to € 4.8 billion.
