Online poker in France : The imminent opening marked by six new licenses

In a few hours, online poker players in France will enjoy the joy to play freely on the Internet. Exactly three weeks after the first issuance of licenses and opening of the French market of sports and horse betting, the decree from the Ministry of Interior authorizing card online games is expected shortly, probably in the Official Gazette of Tuesday, June 29th, 2010. This postponement is due to the objection of Malta on May 27th, 2010 according to EU rules vis-à-vis the draft legislation on online gambling that the French government had submitted to the European Commission in 2009, in particular about the provision of French law that forces players to choose only an operator having a French license of online poker. Members of the European Union were given a period of three months to answer to these comments. As for France, it a priori should answer from the Maltese opposition within thirty days.

And since last June 25th, the Regulatory Authority of online games in France (ARJEL) has released a second list of approved operators for poker and sports betting. Thus, Reel Malta Limited (Pokerstars.fr), Electraworks SAS (Partypoker.fr, Actpoker.fr), Iliad Gaming (SAS Chilipoker.fr) and Partouche Gaming SAS (partouche.fr) now have their ticket to operate in the market of online poker. And three licenses of sports betting have also been offered to LIL Managers Limited and Electraworks SAS. As a reminder, this authority have already allowed eleven French and foreign licensed operators for circle games, which are Unibet, Bwin, Everestpoker, PMU, Sajoo, Eurosportbet and Winamax on June 8th, 2010.
