WSOP 2010: Thriving despite crisis

We can say that the World Series of Poker 2010 in Las Vegas did not succumb to the financial crisis in Europe and will not worry too much with another recession in the United States. That's what Seth Palansky, the communications director of the WSOP said to the Californian daily newspaper Los Angeles Times. According to the figures recorded during the first ten days of the 57 competitions planned until July 17, 2010 at Rio Casino, the number of registered participants is rising compared to 2009 with a growth rate of 5% compared to the last edition in three tournaments : 421 players were enrolled at the $ 10,000 buy-in tournament and 792 players at the first tournament of $ 5,000. The turnout at No-Limit Hold'em has risen by 21%.

The impacts of the crisis in Europe, including the fall of the Euro have been foreseen by organizers of the WSOP and the repercussion of the entry fee for participants who should pay in dollars. But the effect of the image of the World championship of poker, a well known event to celebrate poker once a year, was favorable to the tournament. If in 2009, 61,000 players from 115 countries for a prize pool of $ 174 million participated in the WSOP tournament and saw the coronation of Joe Cada who won $ 8,547,402 and a third place for the French Antoine Saout with $ 3,479,670 this year, the main event of $ 10,000 entry fee gathered 6,494 players. To remember, the World Series of Poker with 57 poker tournaments are held since last May 28th and will finish on July 17th, 2010 in Las Vegas with entry fees ranging between $ 1,000 to $ 50,000.
