WSOP: The enigma of a tarnished card

Just after the starting of the WSOP, organizers were faced with what appeared to be a first attempt of cheating. When distributing the cards at the Orange table 323 during the first day, one player has stopped the gesture of the dealer who gave the cards. John D'Agostino had noticed that one playing card looked marked. When we looked closely at the card in question, we see that a corner had been torn. Participants at the table and the casino staff were surprised about the identity and the thought of the author of this marking. Indeed, the torn corner of the card was too visible for it to be described as voluntary. The player who discovered the incident has also highlighted that there are better ways to mark a card.

The Ace of Spades which caused the interruption of the game is not a low card because it has a high value in poker. But players had not been affected of the incident, the card was quickly changed and the games were resumed. If you consider the quality of players present at the tournament, as Tim Pham, James Van Alstyne, it seemed unlikely that people in their standard could have commit an act so low. According to assumptions, it could be a manufacturing defect, or a scratch due to the shock of the card with tokens. But everyone is unanimous, the fact that this is the Ace of Spades which is concerned by this failure was not a fortuity. After this fact, everyone remained vigilant during the rest of the events to let the tournament take place in the highest integrity and usability.
