New Brunswick: Yes to poker and slot machines

Despite the reluctance of an expert, the Canadian province of New Brunswick opens its first casino. The specialist of gaming phenomenon has serious concerns that addiction to gambling will have devastating consequences on the society of the province. The new casino of the province is located near the tourist site of the Magnetic Hill. It will include 500 slot machines, 22 table games and a poker room of eight tables. The project fully funded by Sonco Gaming has $ 90 million cost. Although the Province of New Brunswick did not participate in its funding, it is guaranteed to receive 50% of profits from the agreement between the owner and the provincial government. According to estimates, the province will receive an annual profit of 25 million dollars.

"We believe this will help bring business in New Brunswick, the Moncton area certainly, and create 400 jobs," said Marc Belliveau, spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, who think that the compromises involved in this play center will be very positive for the province. For his part, Peter McKenna, professor of political studies at the University of Prince Edward Island, believes that this project will have an adverse impact on the population of New Brunswick. Mr. McKenna, who wrote a book on the phenomenon of play in Atlantic Canada is skeptical vis-à-vis the fact that the casino can attract many tourists. He believes rather that the main Casino's clients will mainly come from the south-east of the city.
