Online games market: Belgium marks its opening

Good news for fans of poker and casino online in Belgium. Local legislation is about to liberalize the market. Indeed, the House of Representatives has passed a law in favor of the opening. The application of this law which embraces both activities of poker on the Internet and poker liveand also sports betting, is expected before the end of this year. The scale of this new bill won't however affect the lottery in order to preserve the monopoly of the State. For this purpose, a firm will be created for manage the market conditions attached. This is the Belgian Gaming Commission.

According to this law, obtaining a license for live activity is obligatory for any company wishing to offer online gaming services. This is the first condition imposed. Then, it is imperative that the server operator is itself installed in Belgium. This implies for foreign companies of online gambling that the detention of a live license must precede the obtaining of a permit to offer online services to players located in Belgium. In addition, the authorities have limited the number of licenses to be filled, while giving priority to local operators. Such restrictions lead specialists of the industry to assume that, for circumventing the difficult access to the license, foreign companies will fall into the illegal practice of offering their services to Belgians from their own country. Would Belgium react to this strategy if the same law were adopted by another country ?
