Games: Estonia goes to war against illegal sites

A few tiles ago, Estonia had announced its willingness to fight against illegal gambling. In this context, Estonia has completed last Tuesday its list of illegal gambling operators who should be banned by the internet service providers in the country. To implement the new law adopted earlier this year, the council share the point of view that there is only one operator who has a permission from the State, so all others must be considered as an outlaw, it is quite legitimate to block them. This list includes some famous 150 domain name and among them there are big online poker names.

Estonian internet providers are now invited to disable IP access to all Estonian sites that appear in the list under penalty of a fine of 40,000 crowns. On the list sent to Estonian internet providers are names of companies that showed a real interest in the Estonian market, some of them have already taken steps to acquire a gaming license in the country. For players, using a good proxy may be an effective solution to bypass the blockage, but experiences in other Member States of the EU show that some poker sites use a variety of tricks to evade the law and to continue providing online games to players of a given country. A simple change of the web address as soon as it begins to appear in the list of sites to block was the most current.
