Online gambling: Forbes sifts the American poker industry

The American Magazine Forbes.com has just published an article this week about online poker. The article by Nathan Vardi entitled "Fed Cracking Down on Poker" examines the various groups of poker which currently operate on the poker market in the United States and wondered if the government is ready to repress an industry that generates $30 billions of bet. The article asks questions about the future of the American industry of online poker where 2.5 million people play and shows how the federals are lost in their attempt to block online games. Vardi examines some of the top names in the industry, including Doyles Room. The article also looks at groups such as Party Gaming, which was forced to leave the area after the introduction of the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) in 2006.

Some sites still serve customers from the United States and clearly indicated in the article they felt they did not violate the law. Doyle Brunson is quoted as saying he believes that online poker is legal in the United States. "I have no problem with the Department of Justice, and I hope it will not have a problem with me," he said in the article. "At my age, I do not mind if they will sue me." On the question why the American government has not punished the big names in the industry of online poker, the author answers this question by quoting the former head of the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, Frank Catania as saying "The federal government will not undertake any action against them because it has a chance of losing”.
