Loto-Quebec: The casino state firm begins in online poker

The Quebec government recently authorized Loto-Quebec to offer poker and online gambling following the declaration of Wednesday, February the 3rd, 2010 made by the Quebec Minister of Finance, Mr. Raymond Bachand. In Quebec, Loto-Quebec is the only institution authorized to offer gambling, he also holds a virtual monopoly on legal gambling offers on the entire territory of the beautiful province. The permission for Loto-Quebec to offer online poker is a wise choice. Indeed, the players from Quebec have the opportunity to play on more than 2,000 illegal gaming platforms excluding the Quebec Treasury in any right of taxation and get no benefit while it is the only entity which bears the social cost.

The Government therefore believes that it is the time to create an offer on the Internet that can be controlled and whose profits remain in Quebec to finance social projects. During his speech, the Minister of Finance has not forgotten to mention that the Swedish example, using this approach, "the government has succeeded in diverting 30% of poker players to the Swedish state offer”. The Quebec government had conceived its new project on the Swedish model. The CEO of Loto-Quebec, Alain Cousineau says he has done everything to protect the State firm to initiate legal action against these illegal gambling sites, but these lawsuits were unsuccessful until here. Instead, he prefers to opt for something safe, that stable player can enjoy and with an assistance program to fight against addiction.
