French bill on online games: The EGBA asserts its dissatisfaction

After the adoption by the members of the French parliament last Tuesday, October the 13th of the bill on the opening in the competition of the sector of online games in France, this new text is already disputed by operators of online games. To the announcement of what had to be good news for the sector, some operators of online casino, sports betting and online poker did not hide their disappointments. They regret that the amendments voted by the French elected representatives "deteriorate the conditions of opening of the market". In a communiqué, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) went so far as to say that: "Several amendments strengthen the limitations against the new potential of European entrants and strengthen even more the position of incumbent operators, Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) and la Française des Jeux (FDJ)".

The bill will be debated by senators in some weeks, but by waiting for the decision of senators, the EGBA thinks that many limitations are established and inequitable and it risks to damage the good running of the market of online games. And what worries most the EGBA is the perspective of the viability of French market which will not be in compliance with European laws. Let us remind that the bill, presented by the Minister of the Budget Éric Woerth, on the opening in the competition of online games had obtained 302 votes against 206 in the National Assembly. The new law is going to allow new private operators to launch sites of sports betting, equestrian bets and poker. This law is going to break the monopoly detained up to here by the PMU and the FDJ.
