French online game: The Parliament passes the bill
The legislative stage concerning the opening of the market of French online games to competition has been just crossed. Indeed, by 302 votes against 206, the Representatives adopted the bill presented by the Minister of the Budget, Eric Woerth. Eric Woerth’s bill aims at putting order in the sector of French online games and it, in order to protect legal players but also legal operators. That means in a way, the end of reign for La Française des Jeux and PMU, the two only entities which could up to now offer services of online games like sports betting, online bingo, online poker and all that is gambling on Internet on the whole French territory.
Online game sector is currently a true jungle because of the lack of this law. Not less than 20,000 operators propose non consistent offers indeed with the French legislation. We understand better this passion when we known that this market generates more than €800 millions last year. The bill validates the creation of an Authority of the online games regulation which will have as task to distribute licences and to be the gendarme in the sector. The bill prohibits: one-armed machines but also « spread betting », especially on politics, newsreel, Stock Exchange. On the other hand are authorized mutual horse betting, sports betting and poker. Eric Woerth hopes that this new text can be ready before the football world cup in South Africa, a calendar which is not reliable according to the opposition. According to the Minister of Budget, about fifty licences will be delivered before the summer 2010.
