Opening of the online games: The PMU stake on sports betting
The vote of the new bill on the opening of the online games sector in France will be for the Paris Mutuel Urbain (PMU) synonymous of the beginning of the end of its monopoly on the sports betting in particular the horse bets from the year 2010 on. In expectation for the liberalization of online games, the PMU will set up other strategies and aims at other ambitions. According to its president, the company initially will vary its tenders of sports betting. And the group is already on the way to finish this project in order to be ready for any possibility the coming day, because the bill will maintain the monopoly of mutual on the real network. The PMU seeks too to be in the trio leader of the market.
The president of PMU compared the liberalization of the market of online game with that of the telephone a few years ago. In that time, there were ten operators on the market and that now only some of them survived. To avoid remaking the same error, the president recommends a “controlled opening”. Let us remind that the representatives have just finished last week the examination of the future law on the liberalization of the French online games sector and will have to pass to the solemn vote of the assembly this October the 13th. The State wants that this law will be effective before the football world cup 2010. For the government, this law aims before all at surrounding the non controlled increase of tenders of online games.
