French online game: The European Union expresses a favourable opinion
Operators of online game can finally be delighted. Indeed, Le Figaro published in its edition of September the 1st, 2009 that the bill concerning the opening of the French market of online gambling games has the European Union approval. In June, the European Commissioner in charge of Company and Industry, Günther Verheugen, had noticed the risks of incompatibility with the European law, concerning the free service performance of the services in the Union and France risked pursuits by the Commission for community offence. The French State had to bring some modifications to its initial project. On August the 27th, the European Union appeared more favourable after the addition of amendments to the initial project. In all, France will have to accept licenses delivered in other countries of the Union. Nevertheless, operators of online game will have to apply for a license to be able to operate in France. Operators will not have to have a unique correspondent in France.
It also gave up to the debated obligation for operators to have a unique fiscal correspondent in France. Studies are in sights on 2012 concerning the upper limit of the rate of transfer and the consent of the sports federations to be able to propose sports betting on their competitions; both points were criticized by the services of Günther Verheugen. But by waiting for these results, this European Commission answer looks like an authorization. After several delays, the bill will henceforth have to recover: both Parliament Chambers are going to study the text in October, vote and promulgation at the beginning of the year, licenses will be probably attributed at the end of May, 2010.
