Illegal gambles: Managing directors of coffee bar stand trial in Alfortville
Even though the « La Française des Jeux » is the only one operator authorised to take an advantage of gambles like bingo and video poker in France, several restaurants managing directors in Alfortville, in Val-de-Marne were surprised proposing these gambles. And even though the law concerning gambles, foreseen to be applied from the 1st of January 2010 had to break this FDJ monopoly on the web, for physical firms, law doesn’t change. “Apart from La Française des Jeux and with the exception of fun fairs and casinos, law prohibits gambles commerce”, the prosecutor Jean-Paul Content who opened the trial on last June the 5th at a Créteil court of petty sessions chamber, specifies. These coffee bar managing directors were arrested because they dissimulated gambles by standard electronic games, acts dated since 2001. If these café-owner and these café managing directors present at the hearing recognize having really done these acts, in the other hand, they tell that the fact of playing bingo or playing casino in video are one the motivations attracting crowd in these places. “That brings crowd and make customers faithful… Cafés are now deserts”, the one of them asserts to say that it is not really the gambles which interest them. If the public prosecutor requested a suspension of sentence, fine from €1,500 to €3,000 can hit these coffee bars and cafés manager.
