Poker accessories: €11 millions of turnover in 2008 in France
With the increase of the popularity of poker moreover on TV, thanks to great tournaments broadcasting like World Series of Poker (WSOP), World Poker Tour (WPT), Canal + Poker Tour… as well as the success of poker online games, playing real cards interest also more and more French. According to NPD group, an international enterprise for marketing study, a real strengthening of poker was noticed in France these two last years. In 2008, this enterprise which collected data near big distributors covering 70% of the French market asserts that the sale of playing cards, chips and poker suitcases have reached € 11 millions. Apart from the turnover generated by the industry of poker, NPD Group unveils too through this study several aspects of this market and poker enthusiasts’ profile. 40% of sale of products related to poker was made in hypermarkets if 17% in toys’ shop. The age of the greater part of players, more than 52% of the buyers, is between 45 and 64, 17% of players are under 24 years old and 9% around 30 years old. The youngest, which are between 18 and 35 years old, are poorly interested to physical cards games because they are mostly used to online poker. “In 2 years, about 3.1 millions units were bought in Supermarket”, asserts Kim Tran, Games Analyst at NPD Group to prove the dynamism of this market. The best period of cards sale is during Christmas.
