Student Wins £5,000 and WSOP Seat at Major British Poker Tournament
Simon Pettet, a math student at the U.K.'s Chester University, was recently crowned VC 2006 King of Poker at London's Cafe de Paris. Although several celebrities, including Atomic Kitten's Liz McClarnon and Rebecca Loos, attended the event, the 21-year-old managed to remain focused on the poker action. Pettet started playing online poker just over a year ago. After awhile, he joined his campus' poker circle and started organizing games with his friends. The VC tournament was his first major poker competition. On top of the crown and sceptre that were already included in the prize pool, the math and sports science student scooped a £5,000 (~ $9,400) cash prize as well as a seat at the prestigious WSOP tournament, to be held this summer at Harrah's Rio Casino in Las Vegas. It seems that with this glamorous debut in the field of high rollers, the young British poker player can stop worrying about making ends meet.
